About me
Kumu Kahikilani Akana carries a deep-rooted legacy born in the traditional fishing village of Keʻei, Hawai’i. Raised within the lands of Kekūhaupiʻo, she was immersed from birth in the cultural practices of the land and sea. Her journey in hula began at age five under her mother’s guidance, who famously remarked that Kahikilani learned the kaholo before she could walk. Her foundation was further strengthened by esteemed mentors, including Uncle Jay and Māpuana Deramos, Kumu Napua Kam, and Aunty Hilda Keanaaina. At 14, she began a pivotal period of growth under Kumu Hula Nani Lim Yap, performing professionally and eventually sharing hula with global audiences. Beyond the stage, she served as a docent and historian for Hulihe’e Palace, guided by respected Nā Kupuna. After thirty years of dedicated practice, Kahikilani reached a milestone in her journey in 2012, graduating as Kumu Hula under the guidance and teaching of Kumu Nani Lim Yap." Later that year, she founded Hālau Nā Lei O Kahikilani in Las Vegas. Today, she continues to inspire new generations, preserving the traditions of her heritage with the same devotion fostered in the tides of Keʻei.
